Could Remako Work On Switch?
Last week Final Fantasy VII launched on the Nintendo Switch. Almost immediately, people started to see how moddable it was. It turns out (at least) some mods could be gotten to work on the portable system's version of FF7. A few days after release, multiple individuals started contacting me about the possibilities for a Switch port of the mod.
I would be happy to make this a reality, but there are a few complications:
- I don't have a Switch, so I can't develop it myself
- I do not want to hand over ownership of (part of) my mod to just anyone
- As far as I know, it is not yet known which parts (if any) can be converted to Switch
- The source files are not easily accessible, for people to test the mod on Switch with
- The new v1.0 (battle textures, movies, etc.) hasn't been released yet, complicating third-party development of a Switch port
- I am very busy with v1.0, so at the moment don't have a lot of time to look into this myself
To alleviate these problems, I am crowdsourcing the proof of concept phase of the Switch port. I have created a download with some selected source materials. This should be enough to test out if the various parts of the mod can be ported to the Switch version of FF7.
Everyone can take a crack at it. I have set up a Discord channel where people can discuss the port and their progress on the proof of concept. Once we've got a working solution for Switch, some interested people and v1.0 for PC has been released, a team can get to work on porting and testing the mod for Switch.
The source files contain the first few minutes of the game: intro movie, first field background, menu avatars, and the first battle's background textures. This is easy to test through a New Game start and has multiple types of textures/file types, making it representative of the rest of the game.
